The Problem

The SEA LIFE Trust is working hard to protect sea turtles across the world. Find out more about what we’re doing.

Sea turtles have been swimming in our oceans for millions of years! Their hatchlings have to survive against the odds to make it to the sea when they first hatch. Once they do reach the sea, they have to face some real dangers. Two big threats to their survival are:

  • Getting accidentally caught in fishing nets – hundreds of thousands of turtles are caught in this way every year and many die as a result
  • Plastic pollution – some studies have shown that up to 80% of young turtles sampled have plastic in their stomachs. This plastic clogs up their digestive systems and can ultimately lead to starvation and death

You can help!

There are some simple things you can do around how you use plastic and choose seafood that can really help protect turtles!
